Festival of Ideas talks 2016

From Conflict to Compassion: The Transformation of Human Society

Movement from a world of turmoil and conflict to one of compassion and justice necessitates transformation of both society and individuals. Editor and publisher Dr May Hofman discusses how we might achieve this.

May Hofman is director of George Ronald Publishing, having worked previously for the United Nations in the Bureau of Publications of the International Labour Office. She was a founding member of the Oxford University Bahá’í Society in the 1960s, where she gained an undergraduate degree in music and a doctorate in musicology.

Jointly organised by the Cambridge University Bahá’í Society and Sidney Inspirations Society, Sidney Sussex College

The Movement of Populations: Challenging Our Assumptions

The movement of populations presents an opportunity to revisit our assumptions about human nature and the operation of society. Rachel Bayani challenges our actions and reactions to this phenomenon.

Rachel Bayani is Representative to the European Union of the Bahá’í International Community. Rachel has served as a justice and home affairs counselor to the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU, dealing mainly with asylum and migration issues, and has worked in Bosnia-Herzegovina both with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and with the peacekeeping mission. She has a law degree from the University of Sorbonne in Paris and an LLM in international law from Cambridge University.

Festival of Ideas: Frontiers in a Changing World

Frontiers in a changing world: Global challenges, inner transformations

Frontiers are what divide us, but also what connect us. They are the meeting point of self and other, of experience and imagination, actuality and potential. Frontiers can fence off life from its becoming, hearts from encounter, prejudices from insight, minds from curiosity. But they can also mark the junctures at which progress is possible. They are the starting points of exploration, gateways to discovery, signals to reconciliation, beginnings of transcendence, the exact places where ignorance and isolation end and contact begins.

What are the planet’s most critical frontiers today? How are they shifting? What frontiers will each of us choose to establish or break as we face the meeting and the clash, the birth and death of frontiers across the world?

A talk by Ismael Velasco. Organised by the Cambridge University Bahá’í Society as part of the Multi-Faith series for the Festival of Ideas.

London Youth Conference

Invitation to the youth of Cambridge! Across the world this summer 114 conferences are taking place for about 10,000 youth between the ages of 15 and 30, who are contributing their talents and energies to transforming society by taking action that serves the needs of their local communities. These conferences are also for those who want to contribute, but have not yet found a path of service, encouragement, or support to raise up a culture of transformation in their community.

The conferences and the period of engagement and action before and after them promise to be life-changing experiences, where deep bonds of friendship and collaboration are formed, born out of shared experiences and glimpses of what the future could hold if large groups of youth work together locally for a better society.

If you like the idea of a society with a better attitude towards the environment, gender and race equality, justice in economic affairs, the conditions for children, or anything else you think our society could do better on, please follow the link below for more information:

http://londonyouthconference.com/

Please note that the deadline for registration is on 20 August, so please register as soon as possible, or contact the youth conference committee if you are interested in learning more.
